Cancel insurance after pickup and title hand-off are complete, not before. Until then, you may still legally own the car, and an uninsured loss could be your problem. Some states also penalize an insurance lapse on a vehicle that is still registered. Where Florida requires it, handle plates and registration before you cancel. Then ask your insurer to make the effective date the donation pickup/title-transfer date and to refund any prepaid premium.
The right cancellation sequence
Confirm pickup and title hand-off
Do not cancel while pickup is still pending. First, confirm the vehicle has been picked up by Coastal Wheels or that pickup is happening now and you are handing off the signed title. Write down the pickup date, the odometer if available, and the name of the person or organization receiving the car. That date should usually be the insurance change date.
Handle plates and registration
Before calling your insurer, check whether Florida needs any plate or registration action first. Florida generally ties required insurance to a vehicle that is still registered or has an active plate. If the Florida DMV instructs you to surrender plates, cancel registration, or update records before dropping coverage, do that first. If no action is required, move to the insurance call.
Call with the donation date
Call or message your insurer after the title hand-off is complete. Give the donation pickup date and ask that any change use that same date as the effective date. Say that the vehicle was donated and is no longer in your possession. If the insurer asks for proof, provide the pickup receipt, donation paperwork, or title-transfer confirmation you have.
Remove or cancel coverage
If you have a multi-car policy, remove only the donated vehicle and keep the rest of the policy active. Confirm the other cars and drivers remain insured. If this was your only vehicle on the policy, ask to cancel the policy effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. Continuous-coverage note: do not create a gap for any vehicle you still own, drive, lease, finance, or keep registered.
Request any premium refund
If you prepaid your premium, ask whether a prorated refund is owed from the effective cancellation or removal date. Refunds depend on your policy terms, billing status, and insurer procedures, so ask for the amount and how it will be sent. If you pay monthly, ask whether any final balance or credit remains after the change is processed.
Keep written confirmation
Before you end the call, request written confirmation showing the vehicle removed or the policy canceled, the effective date, and any refund or balance. Do not rely only on a phone note. Save the confirmation with your donation receipt and title paperwork. Also keep any Florida plate or registration receipt. For a separate checklist, see our Release of Liability Guide.
Why the order matters
On the Space Coast, a short insurance call can feel like the last step, but it should not be the first step. Insurance should stay in place until the car is picked up and the title has been handed off. If the vehicle is damaged, stolen, or involved in a loss before that point, early cancellation can leave you exposed. Some states also treat a registered vehicle without insurance as a lapse. Because Florida procedures can depend on registration and plate status, check the Florida DMV before ending coverage.
What date to use
Ask the insurer to use the donation pickup/title-transfer date as the effective date for removing the car or canceling the policy. Do not choose an earlier date. If pickup is imminent and your insurer lets you prepare the change in advance, make sure the change is not effective until after the hand-off is complete. If pickup does not happen as expected, keep coverage active and update the insurer. Your records should match: pickup receipt, title paperwork, insurance confirmation, and any Florida DMV receipt.
Common questions
Can I cancel insurance the morning of pickup?
No. Wait until the vehicle has actually been picked up and the signed title has been handed off. If pickup is delayed, rescheduled, or does not happen, you may still own the car. Canceling early can leave you without coverage for a loss and may create a registration-related insurance lapse.
What if the donated car is on a multi-car policy?
Ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle. Do not cancel the whole policy if other cars, drivers, or household vehicles still need coverage. Confirm the remaining vehicles stay active, the donated vehicle is removed as of the pickup/title-transfer date, and any premium change or credit is documented in writing.
Will I get a refund after canceling or removing the car?
You may receive a prorated refund if you prepaid premium beyond the effective removal or cancellation date. The amount depends on your policy terms, billing status, and insurer rules. Ask for the refund amount, how it will be issued, and whether any final balance or credit remains.
Do I need to return plates before canceling in Florida?
Florida requirements can depend on plate and registration status. In some situations, a state may require plate surrender, registration cancellation, or another DMV step before insurance ends. In other situations, a record update may be enough. Check the Florida DMV and complete any required plate or registration step first.
