If your registration has expired, you can still donate your car in Melbourne. Coastal Wheels can accept most vehicles even when the tags are long past due. What matters for donation in Florida is that you have a valid title in your name — not current registration stickers. You do not need to renew the registration or pay back fees just to give your car away. We’ll schedule a free tow anywhere across the Space Coast and you’ll receive a tax receipt for your gift to Heritage for the Blind.
Here’s how it works: as long as your Florida title is in your name and free of major problems, we can usually complete the transfer. Our towing partner picks up your car where it sits — driveway in Viera, apartment lot in Palm Bay, or a shop in West Melbourne — so there’s no need to drive it. Once it’s signed over, the vehicle becomes the charity’s responsibility. You should notify the Florida DMV of the transfer to cut off future liability like tolls or tickets. Coastal Wheels handles the sale process and Heritage for the Blind uses the proceeds to support people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check your Florida title, not your registration
Grab your Florida title and make sure it’s in your name and the information looks correct. Don’t worry if the plate is expired or the sticker is years out of date. For donation, the key document is a valid title in your name, not current tags or a renewed registration.
2. Tell us about your car’s condition and location
Go online or call to share basic details: make, model, year, whether it runs, and where it’s located around Melbourne, Palm Bay, or Suntree. Be honest if it’s been sitting, has dead tags, or won’t start. This helps us line up the right tow truck and confirm we can accept it.
3. Schedule free towing anywhere on the Space Coast
Coastal Wheels arranges a free pickup time that works for you. Our towing partners can meet you at home in Viera, your condo off A1A, or your workplace near Eau Gallie. You don’t have to drive the car or visit the DMV first — the tow is included and costs you $0.
4. Sign the title and hand over the keys (if you have them)
At pickup, you’ll sign the Florida title over to the charity following our simple instructions. If you’ve misplaced the keys, tell us in advance — we can usually still accept the vehicle. Once the title is signed, the car is no longer your responsibility from a vehicle-ownership standpoint.
5. Notify the Florida DMV and keep your tax records
After pickup, submit a notice of sale or transfer with the Florida DMV to officially show you’re no longer the owner. Coastal Wheels sends a tax receipt for your donation to Heritage for the Blind. You can typically deduct at least $500; over $500, you’ll use IRS Form 1098‑C with your return.
Potential complications to watch for
No title or title not in your name
Tip: Expired tags are usually fine, but a missing or incorrect title can slow things down. If the title is lost, you may need a replacement from the Florida DMV. If it’s in someone else’s name, we’ll walk you through what documentation is needed to transfer it properly before donation.
Active loans or liens still showing on the title
Tip: If your title lists a lienholder, the loan must be paid off and the lien released before you can donate. Check the front of your title for any lien information. If one is listed, contact the lender or the DMV for a lien satisfaction letter or updated title before scheduling pickup.
Missing plates or very long-expired registration
Tip: Even if you turned in the plate or the registration expired years ago, we can usually still accept the vehicle. Just be sure the car is parked legally on private property. We’ll tow it. You should not drive the car on public roads with expired tags to meet the tow truck.
Not notifying the DMV after you donate
Tip: After the tow truck leaves, some donors forget to tell the Florida DMV they’ve transferred ownership. That can lead to future toll notices or tickets coming to you. Always file a notice of sale/transfer promptly so state records clearly show the vehicle has left your name.
